Trek the Annapurna Trail

Himalayas, Nepal

The Annapurnas are a range of Himalayan mountains, which lie just about in the centre of Nepal, and the trek travels around the entire Annapurna massif, visiting the Tibet-like country on the northern slopes of the Himalaya and the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge. This trek is one of contrasts between the green terraced farmland of the Marshyangdi valley and the semi-arid environs of Lower Mustang. Much of the trek is through lowland country, but there is one high pass reaching an altitude of 5426m, The Thorung La which is undoubtedly a highlight of the trip is not difficult, but this is still a long trek at high elevation. You should also be aware that you might have to return to Dumre if it is impossible or dangerous to cross the Thorung La because of snow or altitude sickness. There are years when the weather allows it to stay open, but Thorung La is usually snowbound and closed from mid-December to mid-April.

The Himalaya of central Nepal are dominated by the gigantic Annapurna Range consisting of Annapurna. I, II, III, IV, Annapurna south, Gangapurna, Machhapuchare, Lamjung and Hiunchuli which together form one of the most dramatic and scenic span of peaks to be found anywhere in the World. Challenging trekking experiences abound in these great mountains. This enormous forest of frozen Himalayan giants can be circumnavigated in a trek of three weeks.
